Parents Television Council
I know it's been awhile, but it's nice to see that the Parents Television Council is still doing their part to help promote the Whedonverse.
They describe Dollhouse
as follows:
In addition to sexually suggestive dialogue, the Actives are often shown in the Dollhouse scantily clad, with nudity implied while Actives change or shower behind opaque walls. Every episode includes several bloody gunfights and martial arts battles. Death is frequently depicted. Foul language has included the words “bitch,” “piss,” “ass,” and “ho”.

L&O: Conviction
The pilot for J. August Richards' new series, Law & Order: Conviction, is available for free download at iTunes. I overpaid. I suppose I should put this behind tags: ( Read more... ) | | Thursday, October 20th, 2005 | | 7:38 am |
The Parents Television Council yet again gives us good marketing material
Yes, it's that time of year again. Time for the annual PTC "ratings" of network shows. For those who are unfamiliar with the Parents Television Council, here's how it breaks down: Theory: A nonprofit organization alerts parents to content in television programs which may be inappropriate for younger viewers. Actual practice: A bunch of scantimonious morons, assuming that everyone in America has the emotional maturity of a toddler, rant against shows that contain (not condone, simply contain) anything to do with sex, violence or drug use, and "rate" a show based on whether it would offend your grandmother. Not your cool grandmother, the other one. Irony: Since most people are mature and intelligent enough to enjoy, appreciate and understand television shows more engaging and nuanced than 7th Heaven, the "attacks" wind up being pretty good ad copy. This year, the PTC had some things to say about my favorite show, Veronica Mars: This series includes a great deal of sexual content with story lines revolving around cheating husbands and sex-crazed teenagers. In the first episode a high school bully tells Veronica that the only time he cares what a woman has to say is when she is having sex with him. Comments of this nature are common. Violence is rated yellow for this series, because of teen drinking and the occasional gang fights. Language for this series is also rated yellow. Profanity such as “bitch,” “ass,” “piss,” and “hell” is often used. Now, I ask you, don't you just feel like skipping Lost? | | Thursday, October 6th, 2005 | | 11:39 pm |
First nine minutes of Serenity online First reel can be watched in your browser. This is not pirated. Universal has put up the clip as a teaser. It's the full first nine minutes of the film. Btw, in medium quality on my 2.5 P4 with 256 of RAM and crappy video card, this looked incredible! The streaming video quality is pretty amazing. If you know anybody who's sitting on the fence about seeing the movie this weekend, this may get them in there. Spread it around. | | Wednesday, October 5th, 2005 | | 7:46 pm |

Serenity - Monday Numbers boxofficemojo.comSerenity pulled in $740,000 yesterday. Looking a little deeper into the numbers, Flightplan pulled in $1,072,175, but that's $313 per screen, as opposed to Serenity's $335/screen. Likewise, The Corpse Bride only did $587,107, which was only $183/screen. Into the Blue went deeper into the red, only doing $537,809 at $193/screen. A History of Violence was actually the best per screen performer, pulling in $552/screen, for a total of $740,000. Good news? I think so. The Corpse Bride, after doing $19 million it's first weekend in wide release only did $319/screen on the following Monday, whereas Serenity did more than that after a lackluster weekend. Also, compare Serenity's audience with that of a Jodie Foster movie (older skewing) or a stop motion animated film (kids). Most people in Serenity's target demo are working during the hours that 2/3rds of the showings are happening. All in all, while it's too early to say, it appears that either fan loyalty or word-of-mouth are keeping us in the hunt. What we have to do is keep going, bringing, and recommending. | | 2:40 pm |
Rabid fans
Um, apparently there's an idea going around that the zealousness of Firefly fans is turning off casual genre fans to Serenity. Excuse me? I'm not going to go off on a rant (which would just support the argument with which I disagree), but are we really rabid? Compared to Star Wars fans? Or Trekkers? I mean, I don't recall stories of people quitting their jobs and camping out in front of a theater (the wrong theater, for that matter) for the premiere. I also don't recall anybody setting up a multimillion dollar PayPal fund to pay for a fifth season of a fourth spinoff that most fans didn't like anyway. I mean, we're vocal and all that, but seriously. Rabid? Jeez, that's like arresting a person for stealing a stack of legal pads after getting laid off from Enron. | | Sunday, October 2nd, 2005 | | 1:48 pm |

Friday Serenity Box office numbers
Numbers are coming in from different sources. showbizdata.com is showing Serenity at 3.9 million. the-numbers.com is reported 4.2 million for Friday, just behind Flight Plan, which is in it's second week, but on a third more screens. Into the Blue is getting its ass kicked. Joss posted the following at serenitymovie.com's browncoat forum: So, it starts. We've all heard the good and bad about the B.O., but what does it all mean? 3.9, not huge on the richter scale, but it's the aftershocks that count. I talked to the Uni execs and they were very cool. This is less than projected, but they understand (as I've been saying since before I made the thing) that this is about slow growth. Word of mouth. We got some crazy sweet reviews, but more importantly, people are having fun. I saw it with some family last night: the crowd was not big at all, but they really enjoyed themselves and that's what matters. Remember what I said about holding? That's how it's done. (Oh, and people like you all, dragging your friends and seeing it multiple times -- don't think I've forgotten your crazy love.) Normal drop-off for a film is 40% in the second weekend. I really think we can beat that. There's nothing normal about this one, guys, which is why Uni gets such props for taking it on and hanging with it. Remember, "Rome" wasn't filmed in a day. (I'm not sure if that means anything, but it giggles me.) We'll see if we can push Saturday a little harder, maybe even muster up a little Sunday brawn. Then let people get to school, the office, let them talk about it. We've got a long way to go, and it would have been very relaxing to have smashed through to destined success on opening night. But we're not a bunch known for relaxing. You guys have been in the fight for so long, I expect you know that resting everything on opening night is exactly the paradigm this movie is trying to unravel.
Remember, we're still too pretty to die, although I am jowly enough to be mortally wounded. Thanks, my peeps, for always remembering the first rule of flying. I'll check in soon. -j.Now, the most important thing is that Flight Plan isn't a movie people see more than once. Serenity is. Now it's more important than ever to drag friends/family/total strangers to the multiplex. Keep flying! | | Friday, September 30th, 2005 | | 12:43 am |
Serenity reviews
According to rottentomatoes.com, the reviews for Serenity have been positive on the whole. Roger Ebert doesn't have a full review on his site yet, but RT quotes him as saying: "Serenity is made of dubious but energetic special effects, breathless velocity, much imagination, some sly verbal wit and a little political satire."Good ammo for talking people into seeing it. | | Thursday, September 29th, 2005 | | 1:25 pm |

Serenity mention on Digitallifetv.com show digitallifetv.comPatrick and Robert give a great endorsement for Firefly, and express excitement over Serenity on this week's episode. If you're not familiar with Digitallifetv, it's an online show put out by Ziff-Davis/CNet/whatever. It's broadcast via internet every Tuesday night, and is available for free download shortly thereafter. It's basically pop tech for nerds. It's also what I think the future of TV can be: on demand, free, and transmitted via internet. | | 8:16 am |
Apparently we're all quoting Firefly. From Shindig: Mal: And I never back down from a fight!"
Inara: Yes you do! You do all the time!"Y'know, the movie couldn't come out on a worse possible weekend. I have an uncle in town that will keep me homebound until eightish, and take up my whole Sunday. I can probably catch the 10pm show. Saturday I work all day, and I have a party for work that I would insult a number of people if I miss. I want to buy at least two tickets the opening weekend, so I'll probably buy a ticket to a midnight show, even if I can't go. Midnight shows never sell out, so no one will lose a seat because of me, and the movie will get credit for the opening weekend ticket. I look at this as a "voting with your dollars" scenario. I want a sequel. Badly. | | Tuesday, September 20th, 2005 | | 10:28 pm |

Oh, my dear Lord....
I swear, if this time next year, Kitchen Confidential and How I Met Your Mother are nominated for comedy Emmys, I may actually root for Desperate Housewives. Jeebus, they were both awful. At least DH is just okay and overrated. But KC was a yawn-fest that tried way too hard to be Sports Night with a spatula, and Aly's sitcom was so bad, I could only get through it in twenty second bursts. And the sad part is, both NB and AH were good with what they were given. It's just they were given crap. Well, at least it solves my Monday night dilemma. | | Thursday, September 15th, 2005 | | 8:26 am |

Profit
I just got through Profit, David Greenwalt's series before BtVS, back in 1996. This show? Incredible. Of course, it was also cancelled by Fox after nine episodes. It's kind of like when catch your girlfriend in bed with your roommate, so you break up with her, then later you find out she'd been arrested for selling counterfeit handicap parking stickers before you met. Now, the show is only nine episodes, but it's also only eighteen bucks at deepdiscountdvd.com, and free shipping. As for what it's about, I don't want to spoil anybody, but let's just say this: What if Jack the Ripper had worked at Enron? There's a lot of Angelus in Jim Profit, and a lot of Wolfram&Hart in Gracen&Gracen, so it's an added level of fun to see where Greenwalt was coming from. It's very dark, even by today's standards, but there's a good amount of humor, albeit gallows humor. Highest recommendation. | | Tuesday, August 9th, 2005 | | 11:47 pm |
